The word ‘chakra’ is originally from the Sanskrit language, meaning ‘wheel.’ Chakras are vortices of energy which receive & transform energies in our environment.

What is a Chakra?

Chakras are spinning disks of energy that are invisible to the naked eye.

When we learn how to mediate, to become still and quiet in mind and body, we can tune into certain areas of the body and feel these energies.

Why are chakras important?

Not only do chakras influence your mood, your behaviour, they can effect your physical body. Chakras work together as a whole and when energy is flowing freely we have a positive sense of harmony and being “in the flow”.

Chakras can become blocked due to many internal and external factors

when a chakra is blocked the flow of energy is restricted, which can leave us feeling like we’re going against the current of life. Below is a brief overview of each chakra:

The Chakra system

Crown Chakra Sahasrara

The Crown is the last of the seven major chakras, it’s located at the top of the head and is represented by the colour purple or white. Thought is the element of this chakras and it’s related to belief systems, spirituality, knowledge, universal awareness, self awareness, transcendence and vision.

Brow Chakra Anja

The brow chakra is located in the middle of the forehead, slightly above the eyebrows and is indigo in colour. It’s element is Light and is related to intuition, imagination, dreams, vision and pattern recognition.

Throat Chakra Vishuddha

The fifth Chakra is located in the throat area and is related to the colour blue. The element associated with this chakra is Sound. The throat chakra is about communication, creativity, listening and finding your voice.

Heart Chakra Anahata

The heart chakra is located in the centre of the chest and is green in colour. It’s element is Air representing the importance of each breathe we take in and release out.

The heart chakra is the bridge between the 3 lower chakras and the 3 higher chakras. From the place of the heart we experience joy, love, unity, gratitude and compassion.

Solar Plexus Chakra Manipura

It’s located in the Solar Plexus/stomach area and is yellow in colour. The third chakra represents Fire and is our driving force, the ‘fire in your belly’ which affects our self-esteem, self-confidence and will-power.

Sacral Chakra Svadhisthana

The second chakra is orange in colour and located in the pelvis area. It’s represented by the element Water. Its purpose is movement, emotions, connection, and creativity, and it represents the right to feel and have pleasure.

Root Chakra Muladhara

This is the first in the chakra system, it’s red in colour and is located at the base of the spine, the perineum. It’s represented by the element Earth, which is important for supporting a healthy foundation upon which we build the remaining six chakras. It represents our basic physical needs for survival, family, security and the right to be here.
